Hong Kong Heritage Museum
Surrounded by greenery and just out of view of Sha Tin’s towering housing complexes, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum is patterned after the traditional si he yuan: a compound of a harmonious mix of houses built around a central courtyard.
But people don’t just come here for the quaint architecture: the extensive museum is divided into 12 exhibition galleries, each a treasure trove of relics that express the culture and arts of Hong Kong and the nearby South China region.
Notable features include a collection of beautiful Chinese paintings by an acclaimed master of the Lingnan School, Chao Shao-an, a comprehensive and colourful exhibition tracing the development of Cantonese opera, and the first exhibition gallery in Hong Kong designed based on the works of renowned writer Dr Louis Cha (pen name Jin Yong), housing more than 300 exhibits, including early editions of Jin Yong's novels, invaluable manuscripts, documents and photos.
Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery
Also known as Man Fat Sze, Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery is a bit of a misnomer.
For starters, it's a monastery with no monks -- and there are actually more than 12,000 Buddhas.
When travelers arrive, the experience begins with a steep climb up some 400 steps lined with golden Buddhas in a mix of poses.
As travelers work their way up the leafy switchbacks, shameless macaque monkeys are known to make appearances -- often snatching plastic bags in hopes of a treat. After the last curve of the hill, the main hall rises overhead, awash in dramatic red paint and dragon motifs.
Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is one of the two major convention and exhibition venues in Hong Kong, along with AsiaWorld-Expo. It is located in Wan Chai North, Hong Kong Island. Built along the Victoria Harbour, it is linked by covered walkways to nearby hotels and commercial buildings. The venue was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, in association with Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd. Larry Oltmanns led the design as the Design Partner with SOM.
Tai Po Kau
Our guided nature walk in Tai Po Kau shows of the most mature and varied forest in Hong Kong. This 460-hectare site was declared a nature reserve in 1977 and is rich in flora and fauna. It contains over 100 different species of trees. In addition over 160 species of birds, 102 species of butterflies and 50 species of dragonflies have been recorded.
This half-day walking tour is an introduction to the common and most easily identifiable plants, birds, butterflies and dragonflies to be found in Hong Kong’s forests. We begin by walking up the access road into the forest proper and then we will follow one of the shorter, colour-coded trails through the reserve. We also take in the excellent Outdoor Study Centre which has a specially planted butterfly garden and small freshwater ponds that, in season, attract frogs and a variety of dragonflies.
